Things I’d like to have on Gmail

Let’s face it. Gmail is one of the coolest, fastest and efficient web mail services around. It’s also free and offers tons of goodies. I guess everybody knows that. Well, I’ve been using Gmail for a long time and I can say that I am totally dependant on it. I have all my accounts forwarded there and all my devices synchronised to Gmail. Gmail is the only tab in Firefox that never closes. More like a ‘permatab’ :P

Anyway, the thing is that despite all the great things that Gmail offers, in my opinion it lacks of some features. Don’t get me wrong, I’m satisfied with the current features but having something extra will definitely make it a must have mail service. So here are the stuff that I’d like to have on Gmail:

  • Play sound when new mail arrives
  • Integrate Google Reader with the ‘Web Clips’
  • Smart Labels
  • Gmail Drive Integration

Well, that’s my list. But let me explain a little bit more what I’d like to have from each feature.

Play sound when new mail arrives. I know you can install the Gmail notifier and get both visual and sound alerts when new mail arrives but what happens if I don’t want extra processes running on my desktop? I am trying to run a pretty minimal process desktop and playing sound when new email arrives would be great!

Integrate Google Reader with the ‘Web Clips’. Why have both web clips and Google Reader? I mean it would be great to integrate both so that when new items are available to Google Reader I would be able to get the latest news while I’m reading my mail.

Smart Labels. The label feature is pretty cool and efficient. I’d like to have even smarter labels though. For example, I have 10 labels. I’d like to have the option to choose whether I want to see those who have new emails on them or all of them. There’s no purpose of having all those labels taking so much space if there’s no new email on them. Unless of course I want them to be visible. This will work pretty good in the case where you have 10 or more labels and of course you have your filters set to skip the Inbox and archive the mail. So a toggle option would be great. Also in the case that I have a new email that was archived in a label, sound and a ‘Title-change’ would be great as well.

Gmail Drive Integration. Gmail Drive is a really a good idea. I mean you can transfer files immediately to your own web mail space and be able to access it remotely. It would work great putting stuff from work and accessing your files from home later on. An official release from Google would be great.

Well, these are the features I’d like to have on Gmail. Let’s hope google implement some of them in 2007 (:

    Hi

If you use firefox you can get the gmail notifier extension here :

    https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/173/

It does all the things that Gamil Notifier can do, and no need to install extra software.

Hey! Yeah, I am aware of the extension and I do use Firefox. Unfortunately not everybody’s using Firefox, so a more global solution would be nice. Still the extension you mentioned does the job right! Thanks for the tip.

Also i have read an article somewere-think was on digg.com on how you can hack the labels.

So you worked on the CCS member admin? I was goign to do that when i was researching for a dissertation project back in 2004-2005 for my Bsc in Kingston Uni. Didn’t go for it in the end. How is my good friend Mr Masouras?

Yeap, google can’t be ad-free. You can’t have everything (:
Regarding the CCS, I’m still working on it from time to time. As for Mr. Masouras, he is just fine. I’ll pass him your regards.

Thanks for the comments and for dropping by Andreas
